What is this all about?
I’ve had it in my mind for a while now to increase the frequency of my writing. I have two purposes for doing this. One is to create a disciplined habit of writing. I need to do this because so much of what I do rests on the idea that consistency is the key to success. The second reason is to grow my brand as a coach and create opportunities for success in my business interests. So, I thought I would start by writing the thoughts in my mind at the time of writing concerning how to build a business.
It might help if I tell you about the businesses I’m attempting to build. There are two and they are related. The first is the business for which I serve as the Director of Marketing and Product Development, RSS Technology Solutions. The second is a new marketing business that I’m building from the ground up. It is called the RSS Digital Marketing Group. As you can tell, the two businesses are connected as are their interests. The RSS brand is key to both businesses and the marketing theme ties them together for me.
How do businesses start?
That is a broad question and one I really can’t answer definitively. What I can tell you is that RSS Digital Marketing Group actually started several years ago as a side hustle. The blog you are reading is the real beginning. Mark J Peterson, LLC started as a way for me to stretch myself into entrepreneurship and begin to offer my thoughts and assistance to business leaders through a coaching platform.
The coaching uncovered an interest in marketing. I needed to learn how to market my own business and my clients were asking for help with their marketing. So, a personal need and a discovered need in the market place gave me the broad direction to start a marketing business.
I think that is how many businesses start. You have a problem, you discover the solution, you realize others have the same problem, so you offer the solution to them. A business is born.
Is building a business really that simple?
NO! The first post in this blog was on April 26th, 2014, so I’ve been building this business in one way or another for six years. It is just now, in my opinion starting to look like a real business and take on a definite form and identity. Maybe that’s because I work slowly and am too conservative but I’m ok with that.
The reality is that I believe the key to building a business is a consistent and methodical march forward with multiple pivots along the way. I have to remind myself of this fact often because I can get impatient and look for shortcuts. Shortcuts only get you lost. Only consistency and deliberate but thoughtful decisions will build a business. It won’t happen over night, but if you are committed and faithful to the journey, you can build a business.
I’m curious, how would you answer the question, “How do you build a business?” Leave a comment below.
