For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Mark 12:44 (ESV)
I wonder whether there are many who call themselves followers of Jesus today who would give out of their poverty. When I am at my lowest and all my resources depleted, is my love for God so great and my faith in him so deep that I would give the very last of what I have as an offering?
To do so is to demonstrate the kind of love for God that Jesus describes in Mark 12:29-30.
The thing Jesus is measuring here is the faith and love of the worshipper. To the degree that we cling to what we have, we reveal the strength or weakness of our love for God. That love is tested no more powerfully than when God calls us to give to him the only thing we have left and thus the thing we cherish the most.
God, help us love you most.
