And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Genesis 1:3-5
Some scratch their heads while others scoff when they read these verses because, according to Moses, God created light and separated it from darkness, thus creating day and night before He created the sun, moon, and stars. They argue that these things are out of order. Therefore, the account of creation in Genesis is not accurate.
But they fail to realize that God is light. He is the source of light. That He later chose to infuse a heavenly body like the sun with light doesn’t mean light cannot exist without the sun. That is the reality in the eternal city of God. The glory of God lights up that city, therefore it does not need of the sun or moon. God’s glory shines there as it must have in the beginning. (Rev 21:23)
As he did in the beginning, God’s light shines in our souls today, illuminating the path to our eternal delight.
Lord, help us to marvel in your glorious light and find our way home by it!
