He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Colossians 1:15-17
I worry a lot. I worry more when something affects me directly. When that happens, I grow moody and despairing. And then the spiral begins. I grow quiet, and I sulk. I worry more, and I get more despondent. Sometimes, I take days to snap out of it. These are not the characteristics that I want to be known for. They are certainly not the qualities we think of when we think of a healthy person of faith. But it is my reality, and I believe it is the reality for many.
The Bible teaches us that we have no cause to worry about our lives or bodies. But on what grounds can we put away our anxiety? How can we move from despair to hope?
Again, the Bible claims that we have no cause to worry. It makes this claim based on the identity and person of Christ. As a member of the Trinity, Jesus was present and instrumental in the Creation of all things. But His involvement doesn’t end with Creation. It continues into eternity.
For people like me who worry, this truth restores our calm. Namely, that “in Christ, all things hold together.” Think about it. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you are going through; Christ is keeping it together for you. He has your life and future firmly within His grasp. Whatever bad event we can imagine, He is in control. Whatever good thing that we desire but cannot attain, He rules over it.
For all people, saved and unsaved, this should bring comfort. Without Christ, the world would spin out of control. But for the believer, that Christ holds all things together brings the greatest peace of all. Consider this: how ever Jesus holds it all together, He does so for your good. So, you can trust Him. When the creator of the universe is holding your life together, you need not worry.
Lord, teach us to put our hope in you, trusting that our worries are unfounded due to your hand, which holds all things together.
